Creating Efficiencies

Relay Linking

Using sophisticated software algorithms, SynchroGrid can easily link thousands of relays between short circuit models and relay databases, such as ASPEN OneLiner, ASPEN RDB, and PowerBase. These links keep the model updated and always ready for NERC Compliance studies.

The Problem

Common Operations & Inefficiencies

There are many struggles protection engineers face when their database and short circuit models are not linked:

  • Separate Updates: The database and the model are updated independently, often by different teams
  • Lack of Synchronization: There is no expectation for the two systems to be in sync with each other
  • Incomplete Information: The model may not always have the latest relay data available in the database

The Problem, Continued

An unlinked model is a problem when it comes to PRC-027.

Linked relays are a relatively new interoperability feature of databases and short circuit simulation models. Prior to this linking, the separately maintained data poses a set of problems, particularly when it comes to PRC-027 studies.

Unlinked relays means the following tedious prerequisites to a PRC-027 coordination study:

  • Auditing each relay in the model to verify that every one is up to date
  • Downloading relays from the database to update relays in the model that are found to be either out of date or completely missing
  • Manually importing each relay individually into their correct positions in the model

The Solution

SynchroGrid’s Linking Solution

Given the vast size of the grid and the differences in nomenclature between the database and the model, an attempt to manually link all relays is often impractical and time-consuming.

SynchroGrid has an in-house automated solution to perform this task quickly and cost effectively, as well as set up a process that will streamline future PRC-027 studies, improve accuracy and efficiency, and ultimately ensure better compliance and reliability in grid management.

By allowing SynchroGrid to create relay links:

  • One Source of Truth: Instead of having to manually update both the database and the model, once all relays have been linked there is only one source of truth, rather than two varying
  • In Sync: Once SynchroGrid links all of your relays, the model is always in perfect sync with the database
  • Ready to Go: With all relays linked, your engineering team is now ready to go for any type of study needed, no tedious pre-processing necessary!
