SynchroGrid performed an arc flash analysis on the electrical distribution system for a wind farm operated by Pattern Energy. The study was executed to determine the incident energy levels for 500, 34.5, 0.69 kV equipment, and 240 V AC Panels and 125 V DC Panels. Arc flash hazard analysis was performed using ETAP 18.1.1 software. We made arc flash mitigation recommendations when the incident energy exposures were greater than 40 cal/cm2, as mandated by NFPA 70E.
OSHA requires employers to protect employees from electrical hazards that include arc flash. They look to the prescriptive-based requirements of NFPA 70E to fulfill the performance-based requirements included in its standards.
